Celebrate Recovery: Finding help with addictions and life-controlling behaviors

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered, 12-step addiction recovery program designed to help people overcome their habits, hurts and hang-ups. It’s a safe place to be open and honest with life’s struggles, and a place where confidentiality is highly regarded.

It’s a place to find non-judgmental friendships, support and strength. It’s where we learn who God is and how we can deepen our reliance on him. It’s a place where we take a deep look within ourselves to find the source of our hurts so we can allow God to bring healing. As we share our struggles and victories, we trust God’s power to heal our relationship with him and others.

The group interaction is designed not only for those with addictions, but also for family members that are affected. At the U of M, Celebrate Recovery will be focused towards issues students and young-adults face, but is open to anyone of any age.

CR meets on Tuesday nights at 7:00pm at Sojourn Campus Church. We begin with some music, followed by a short lesson. Then we break out into two groups, Men’s Recovery and Women’s Recovery. The small groups are designed for people who are struggling with drugs, alcohol or other destructive behaviors.

Celebrate Recovery’s 8 Recovery Principles

Celebrate Recovery’s ‘Road to Recovery’ is based out of Jesus' teachings, called ‘The Beatitudes’.

Celebrate Recovery at the University of Minnesota is led by Chris and Julie Manthey, who are on staff with Campus Journey Chi Alpha Ministries.

Step 1:
Realize I'm not God; admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable.
"Happy are those who know that they are spiritually poor"

Step 2:
Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him and that He has the power to help me recover.
"Happy are those who mourn for they shall be comforted"

Step 3:
Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ’s care and control.
"Happy are the meek"

Steps 4 & 5:
Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God and to someone I trust.
"Happy are the pure in heart"

Steps 6 & 7:
Voluntarily submit any and all changes God wants me to make in my life and humbly ask him to remove my character defects.
"Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires"

Steps 8 & 9:
Evaluate all my relationships. Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for harm I've done to others when possible, except when to do so would harm them and others.
"Happy are the merciful"
"Happy are the peacemakers"

Steps 10, 11 & 12:
Reserve a time with God for self-examination, Bible reading and prayer in order to know God and his will for my life and to gain power to follow his will.

Yeild myself to be used by God to bring this good news to others, both by my example and my words.
"Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires"
